DETROIT—When the Everlys tried to purchase tickets to Shen Yun Performing Arts last year, they discovered there was only one single ticket left, and the couple wouldn’t have been able to see it together. This year, James and Helen Everly purchased the tickets as a Christmas gift and attended the opening night performance at the Detroit Opera House on Feb. 7.

“I just really enjoyed it ... It all came together very nicely, and I really enjoyed watching it and feeling the music and seeing everything that they were doing,” said Mr. Everly. As an award-winning ballroom dancer and teacher, Mr. Everly naturally paid attention to the technique of the dancers and the style and movements of a wholly new form for him.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. Through music and dance, Shen Yun aims to show the world China before communism.

Mr. Everly said he was watching “to see the seamless lines between, from one movement to the next, enjoy watching how it flows from one thing to the next. Using their arms, using their body, using their legs.”

“I really enjoyed watching that,” he said. “I thought they had really good skill. I wouldn’t be able to do some of the things that they were doing. I really enjoyed watching it.”

“You can tell they enjoy the art and their performance,” he said.

Also moved by the dancers were Joshua and Christina Heath. Mr. Heath, a mortgage broker, said during the performance he let himself be “lost in the choreography.”

Mrs. Heath, who works in marketing, said between the music, dance, colors, and costumes, “it really makes you feel like a part of the story.”

“It was just, I mean, amazing,” she said. “It gave a very graceful and beautiful elegance. It made me feel very tranquil and at peace.”

She described the various colors paired together in the costuming, how the fabric flowed along with the near-impossible-looking moves the dancers executed, and how the animated backdrop was fully integrated with the performance to enhance the colors, experience, and storytelling.

“It just made you feel good and like you wanted to be a part of it,” she said.
