DUBLIN—Retired ballet dancer and choreographer Dex McLoughlin described the Shen Yun dancers as “amazing” when she saw them with her friend Liz Whelan in Dublin’s Convention Centre on March 25.
Ms. McLoughlin was impressed by the strength of the dancers, she said “their precision, their strength, the choreography, lighting, and the general production is fantastic.”
Ms. McLoughlin was impressed by the sheer elegance of the costumes, and the modesty of the dancers. She explained that modern ballet would often have short skirts and low tops, but in Shen Yun you don’t see “more than a wrist or not even an ankle.” She said that Shen Yun portrayed women as delicate gentle flowers.
One of the dances called, The Power of Compassion, shows people in a contemporary town in China practicing the spiritual practice Falun Gong when the persecution suddenly erupts. Falun Gong was banned in China in 1999 after estimates put the popularity of the practice at more than 100 million practitioners.
Ms. McLoughlin said she couldn’t believe that Falun Gong is banned in China today. She said, “How they can ban it? I cannot believe that. I was just fascinated—I didn’t realise it was so strict. Why? Why?”
