SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Christmas and Chinese New Year are only a month apart. And this Chinese New Year brought Hal and Kas Padgett to see Shen Yun Performing Arts at the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center.

“This was our Christmas present for ourselves at the end of January. We enjoyed the show. Incredible talent. I was just telling my husband the performers they must just be working out day in and day out. We also love the music. It was just gorgeous, very beautiful,” said Mrs. Padgett, a researcher.

Her husband is a biotechnology researcher, and they’ve both worked with many people from China.

“They just have to come and watch it,” she said.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.
“It was interesting. I felt like there was a lot of spiritualism in there. Peace and love. Collaboration. So many different things. It evoked a lot of emotions,” said Mrs. Padgett.
Mr. Padgett was impressed with the talent and choreography of Shen Yun. He also enjoyed the Masters of Ceremony, giving introductions to each dance.

“This is a very good guide to the whole show. So I felt I could follow everything as I watched it,” he said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world. One dance depicted the Chinese Communist Party’s human rights crimes.

We’ve worked with a lot of Chinese people because we’re researchers. It was nice to see the show, thinking about them because they’re back in China now, a lot of them. It seems like what I heard was that this kind of show would not be shown in China right now. Maybe one day,” said Mrs. Padgett.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

Well executed. The transition between the video and the performers appearing, that was very well done. I even went and looked at the patents that are listed here,” said Mr. Padgett.
