CHIAYI, Taiwan—“Seeing is believing. I finally got the opportunity to see the extraordinarily outstanding performance presented by Shen Yun today,” exclaimed Yunlin County magistrate Lee Chin-yung, after he saw Shen Yun Performing Arts in Chiayi on April 11.

“The stage design (animated digital backdrops), lighting and sound effects are wonderful. In particular, dancers’ fabulous performance is really awesome,” he said.

Shen Yun takes audiences on a journey of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, relying on classical Chinese dance to tell ancient legends and stories of heroes today.

Magistrate Li was delighted to attend the Shen Yun show recommended by his friends. He said, “Shen Yun has long enjoyed a good reputation. I am really thankful to Shen Yun for performing in Taiwan every year. In addition, we are very lucky to have Fei Tian Academy of the Arts (Taiwan Branch) in Yunlin County. I hope that such an artistic performance can help upgrade the overall (artistic) level in Taiwan.”

“The dancers have a very solid foundation, and every piece has its unique features. In addition to the solid foundation, the choreography is also very unique as every piece has cultural connotations. We were really deeply touched by the atmosphere,” he said.

In addition to the dancers, Shen Yun travels with award-winning vocalists.

Captivated by the heartening song of “Plum Blossom” sung by soprano Haolan Geng, the magistrate praised her saying, “Excellent! This soprano’s performance is indeed breathtaking. In fact, every piece sung by her is wonderful.”

“We have actively promoted artistic education in this county, and the Taiwan Branch of Fei Tian Academy of the Arts happens to be situated in Yunli County’s Niaosong Junior High School. Such a high level performance (Shen Yun) is rarely seen in Taiwan. So, I would like to urge our students and their parents to see Shen Yun,” added Magistrate Li.

A Very Successful Performance

The world top-class performance presented by Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company at Chiayi Performing Arts Center attracted many elite people from all walks of life in the Chiayi area on April 11. Among them was Chiayi Mayor Twu Shiing-jer.

After seeing the performance, he said, “Shen Yun depicts the law of righteousness by means of dance.”

“Excellent!The Shen Yun show is a very professional performance. The dancers have gone through intensive training, so that their fundamental movement skills are exquisite. The synchronization between dancers and live music is perfect. The colors of costumes are very beautiful. The level of the overall design is very high,” said Twu Shiing-je.

Fascinated by the perfect coordination of performers and the animated digital backdrops that can leave audiences with the miraculous feeling of transcending time and space, he exclaimed, “I feel it’s wonderful. It’s indeed excellent.”

“The most outstanding parts are its backdrops. In fact, they are not simply backdrops. They are part of the show. The coordination between high-tech (backdrops) and dance is absolutely seamless.”

Besides considering the beauty and precision of the performance, the mayor notes the deeper meanings.

“Shen Yun is promoting the power of compassion. Without strong words, it merely passes down to us the message that evil can never prevail over good. Although evil forces may appear anytime, righteous power will eventually triumph over all evil,” he said.

He felt that Shen Yun’s mission and message can benefit humanity’s spiritual education.

“The righteous power advocated by Shen Yun can subdue evil,” and he felt that it’s performance, were it allowed in China, would have a positive impact there. Currently Shen Yun is not allowed to perform on the mainland.

“I think the reasons Shen Yun is so popular in Chiayi is that besides its entertaining effect, there are some implied meanings, so that there are so many people who would like to see the show.”

Twu Shiing-je is incumbent Chiayi mayor, ex-minister of Department of Health, former senior advisor to the president, and a former legislator. He graduated from the school of medicine and earned his master’s degree in public health from the National Taiwan University, and he also obtained a doctoral degree from the University of California.
