SAN FRANCISCO—“You have a little of everything, and history,” said Mr. Mike Lano, CBS radio host, after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, Jan. 8.

Based in New York, Shen Yun was formed by artists who came from around the globe in 2006 to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through the universal languages of music and dance.

Mr. Lano said he enjoyed the full spectrum of Shen Yun’s performances, which include bel canto style solo vocalists singing original compositions, classical Chinese dance, ethnic and folk dances from China’s various ethnic groups, an orchestra blending Eastern and Western instruments, and animated digital backgrounds.

Shen Yun captivated him with stories like pieces from the epic Journey to the West, or a dance showing the attire and dress of the ladies of the Tang Dynasty, which is said to be inspired by the heavens.

In addition to showing the traditional culture of China, Mr. Lano found it educational that Shen Yun included pieces up to the modern day.

“It was beautiful, very colorful, and a lot of history and a lot of great culture we need to learn more of,” Mr. Lano said.
