MISSISSAUGA, Canada—Shen Yun Performing Arts made its 2015 debut in Mississauga at the Living Arts Centre on Friday night, Jan. 16, bringing out some of the entrepreneurial city’s business people.
Chris Mohan, owner of Maple Leaf Wheelchair, a business he started in 1993, brought his daughter and her husband to see the renowned classical Chinese dance production on the occasion of his daughter’s 26th birthday.
“I’m very impressed. It tells you so much about China, the story, the history,” said Mr. Mohan.
On a mission to revive the authentic traditional culture of the Middle Kingdom through spectacular dance and music, Shen Yun tours the world with an all-new show every year in which it takes the audience on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture and history.
It was just what Mr. Mohan hoped to see.
“I’ve always been interested in Chinese culture. This is very, very informative, very educational,” he said.
Two masters of ceremonies guide the audience through the performance by providing a brief introduction to each presentation.
They explained some of the particularities about classical Chinese dance, which is the basis of most of the dances seen in the Shen Yun production. In addition, the show also features the ethnic and folk dances of China, along with virtuoso vocalists and an erhu (the “Chinese violin”) soloist.
Serial entrepreneur Joseph McDermott owns an international company doing high-risk merchant transactions. He and his fiancé, Amani Zein, are both experts in multi-level marketing with a substantial following of people using their expertise.
Mr. McDermott said he appreciated how Shen Yun expressed the traditional culture of China through song and dance.
“Very cool, very entertaining,” he said. “I thought the dancing was amazing.”
Ms. Zein shared his enthusiasm.
“The show was amazing. It was breathtakingly beautiful, just beautiful. Funny and very entertaining,” she said.
