SAN DIEGO—Celestina Sachs, owner of the small business Blackbird Ecommerce, praised the professionalism of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the San Diego Civic Theatre on Saturday.

“I love it,” said Ms. Sachs. “I like the stories. Their costumes are beautiful. It’s nicely done.”

The world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, Shen Yun is based in New York, and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

Ms. Sachs said she’s seen the performance advertised for years, and she’s wanted to come for some time. Fortunately, this year worked out for her.

She particularly enjoyed Shen Yun’s live orchestra, which incorporates both Western and traditional Chinese instruments for a unique sound.

“The orchestra is wonderful,” she said.

A Shen Yun performance is focused on classical Chinese dance, along with other short vignettes featuring story-based dances, ethnic and folk dances, and musical soloists. The performance highlights the Chinese civilization prior to communism, when it was called “The Land of the Divine.”

While Ms. Sachs was unaware of this spiritual aspect of the performance, she planned to learn more about it. She also said the timing of seeing Shen Yun was perfect for her, since she’s taking a world history class, and she just finished learning about the different dynasties of ancient China.
She has also visited China for work, but said the state of the country under communist rule lacked color and vibrancy. In contrast, Shen Yun portrays vivid colors on stage and in the animated projected backdrop, she said.

“This seems to me like it’s appreciation [for] a culture that you no longer are able to really celebrate freely, which is really sad,” she said.

Ms. Sachs congratulated the Shen Yun performers for all their hard work and said their artistic efforts are appreciated.

“I know this is a lot of work that they put into it, so I always appreciate the arts, dance, music, singing,” she said. “Arts are so important.”

Ms. Sachs said she would “absolutely” recommend Shen Yun to others and looked forward to seeing it again in the future.

“I would bring my daughter, especially if it changes every year. I'd like to see how it changes,” she said.
