ESCONDIDO, Calif.—This year’s Shen Yun performance at the Escondido Center for the Performing Arts is bringing tears to the eyes of attendees and epiphanies to their minds.

Kevin Kurtz, who leads an assay group for a small biotech company and is a biochemist by trade, said everything about the performance was gorgeous and stunning—including the costumes and dancing.

“What they’re doing is something I never could do,” he said after watching the performance Saturday afternoon. “So it’s really impressive.”

He found the choreography beautiful and hoped the performance would help enlighten people.

“It’s impressive what they’re doing and, like I said,  everything about this has just been breathtaking in a sense.”

His wife, Suzanne, works as a special education teacher. She was brought to tears by the first dances of the performance.

“The dancing and the color is just absolutely beautiful,” she said. “And I’ve just been really enthralled. It’s actually making me think.”

A Shen Yun performance generally includes over a dozen vignettes, with classical Chinese dance as the primary medium to tell stories spanning 5,000 years.
The New York-based company’s mission is to revive ancient Chinese culture, which was once almost lost after communism seized power in China.

She appreciated the divine aspect of the culture and had an interest in learning more about China than she had prior to attending the performance.

“It’s really enlightening that the culture believes that we’ve all come from a divine being. I don’t know if I necessarily agree with it but I do agree that there is something bigger out there for us to believe in.”
