LONDON—Caroline Church, former president of a local charity, thoroughly enjoyed a performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts at Eventim Apollo in London on Jan. 8.

“I loved it. It’s a dream. It really is. The clothes are beautiful, the floaty fabrics, the talent of the dancers, the beautiful backdrops. It’s lovely. It’s a real release from a grey London day,” said Ms. Church.

She said she especially appreciated how Chinese culture was presented. Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from before communism.

“It’s lovely to see, some of the culture that was originally Chinese that’s now exhibited on stage. So that was great. I really enjoyed it.”

To the dancers, Ms. Church said, “Well done. And wow, wow. They’re talented. Unbelievable. Great dedication, beautiful work. It’s made me very happy.”

Orly Wolfson, fundraising director for a charity, expressed what she thought of Shen Yun’s performance.

“I absolutely loved it. Very amazed by the music, the sounds, the dancing. My favorite part is the way they tell a story by dancing and sound. It’s absolutely amazing,” she said.

Ms. Wolfson said Chinese culture is truly wonderful. “I think it’s fantastic. For me, it’s all about culture and learning about countries, and also for my children.

“My younger daughter is here with me today. I think it’s a beautiful way of learning about culture. It’s a very easy way of taking things in by their performance, and to learn it. It’s just phenomenal, beautiful, very interesting,” she said.

Presenting a brand-new set of dance pieces, musical compositions, and solo performances each season, the company takes its audience on a journey through time and space to rediscover the beauty and traditional values of pre-communist China. Shen Yun is banned in China.
Ms. Wolfson felt this deeply. She was moved by “the emotional part. The things that are still happening, like the [host] was explaining. That’s quite sad, but they explain it in a beautiful, emotional way.”

She said the music, the dancers’ movements, and the backdrop were very effective in telling a great story.

All elements help to be “drawn into the story. The sound, the music, the movement. It kind of really takes you into the story.  I absolutely loved the screen in the backdrop as well, how they kind of move in from the screen—in and out. ... I would definitely recommend people come and see the show.”

To the dancers, Ms. Wolfson said, “What an amazing commitment, because to do what they do is a lot of years of practice. I’m very impressed, and I think it’s a proper commitment. Amazing.”
