BOSTON—The Wang Theatre at Boch Center was thrumming with excitement during the performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts on April 5.
Chris and Lisa Ethenesie enjoyed the performance in many ways. Mr. Ethenesie, an attorney, said: “We love it so far. It’s beautiful, interesting, and educational.”
Shen Yun is touring the world to share a revival of traditional Chinese culture before communism.
“We’re learning about Chinese culture and exactly what they told us we were going to learn about before the Communist Party [took over]. It’s just really interesting history and beautiful art,” Mr. Ethenesie said.
Mrs. Ethenesie, an accountant, said it was a “great effort.”
“We draw parallels to our own where we’re Christians and see a lot of parallels. We were talking during the break about Greek mythology. Every culture has its own origination story. And that was very interesting,” he said.
He said that traditional culture is not only lost in China, but perhaps worldwide “to some extent.”
“I love it how they’ve combined the digital stuff. It’s amazing. I’ve never seen anything like that before. And it’s entertaining,” she said. “It’s great for children and for adults. We’ve all been enjoying it.”
Audiences often comment on the colors in the set and on the dancers’ costumes. Mrs. Ethenesie said they were “absolutely beautiful.”
The dance of the ‘Water Sleeves’ caught her attention: “Amazing, amazing: the ladies with the water, the long sleeves.”
Shen Yun also features singers who perform songs in Mandarin using the traditional bel canto technique.
Of the baritone, Mr. Ethenesie said: “Absolutely beautiful voice. He’s really stunning. Stunning.”
Mrs. Ethenesie said the most valuable message she received was “just learning about the culture. Stuff that I just haven’t learned before. And sharing that with everybody else.”
