BOSTON—Shen Yun’s Performing Arts World Company touched town in Boston for four celebrated performances at the Citi Wang Center, Feb. 28 to March 1.

Prominent members of Boston’s art and business communities enjoyed the show.

Jerry Blakeley, developer of many of Boston’s iconic buildings, was floored by Shen Yun.

“I have seen Chinese dancing but nothing as spectacular as this,” Mr. Blakeley said.

Mr. Blakeley attended the performance with his wife, Dr. Tenley Albright Blakeley,the first American woman to earn a gold medal in figure skating.

Discipline and Grace

Alexandra Koltun, former principal dancer at the Boston Ballet and with Deutsche Opera am Rhein Düsseldorf, admired the discipline and passion evident in the grace of the dancers.

“We could relate to the discipline, because in any kind of dance, to achieve your goal you have to have the discipline and passion. You have to love it,” she said.

Mrs. Koltun attended the show with her husband, Alex Lapshin, also a professional dancer and co-founder of the Koltun Ballet Academy.

“I think it is a good mixture between the culture and dance, and the singing,” he said.

A Calming Peace

Sean Slater, senior project manager at Fidelity saw positive energy in Shen Yun. “We like the celestial piece of it,” Mr. Slater said. “You don’t usually see that, especially the spiritual side.”

He attended the performance with his wife, who felt the whole experience was “very peaceful—you just get a calming sense.”

Chris Wilson, former vice president of A&R at Rounder Records, now retired, enjoyed the show with his mother, Margaret Wilson, and his wife, Susan Eleney.

“I like how the music fits the dance, especially the pieces where they do percussion with it,” said Mr. Wilson.

“You’re transported to another world,” said Mrs. Eleney of the colors, the movement, the stories, and the history presented by Shen Yun.

Beyond Dance

Also in the audience was Rachel Williams, a professional piano instructor who has grown up performing music and dance. She said Shen Yun was “beyond just dance … It touched to deeper parts of the soul.”

Boston’s new Mayor, Martin Walsh and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, offered a warm welcome to the show.

Audiences enthusiastically returned the performers farewell wave as Shen Yun left the stage. “See you next year,” the emcee’s said. Boston certainly will.
