FOLSOM, Calif.—“I feel wonderful. I feel inspired,“ Oscar Chiarella said after he saw a Shen Yun performance with his wife Pamela Chiarella at the Harris Center on Jan. 15, ”I didn’t realize we'd get such a wonderful lesson on the history, etc., behind both the dance and the story.”

Mrs. Chiarella said, “It’s spectacular! The costumes are absolutely gorgeous. I’ve never been here, so I’m really glad I came.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company. Founded in 2006 in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts has a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture through dance and music.

Mr. and Mrs. Chiarella own and operate a digital media advertising company. This was their first time attending a Shen Yun performance. They were very impressed by the beauty and elegance of the performance, and were even more impressed by Shen Yun’s mission. “I did not know [reviving traditional culture] was going to be a theme of the show,” Mr. Chiarella said. “I figured it was just dance, but there is so much history involved. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and well presented.”

Shen Yun tours about 200 cities every year to present the beauty and goodness of China before communism. Traditional Chinese culture embodies values such as reverence for the heavens, faithfulness, compassion, respect, loyalty, filial piety, etc. that have sustained Chinese civilization for 5,000 years.

“I don’t know how much of the [traditional] culture still exists, but freedom and faith are important. I [learned that] there is an oppression to the faith, it’s certainly not a good thing.”

A Shen Yun performance also features singers who sing in traditional bel canto technique that was used in early European opera. The singers sing in Chinese and the translation of the lyrics is projected on the backdrop. Mr. Chiarella enjoyed the singing, I thought her singing at the end was very, very nice.”

“I have friends who go to the theater all the time, and they’ve never been here,” Pamela said. “So I’m going to let them know they must come. I'll tell them that it is very colorful, beautiful, and elegant.”

Mr. Chiarella said, “It’s wonderful to learn more about the history of China, and we certainly enjoy it. I'd highly recommend that if anybody wanted to see it.”
