SEOUL, South Korea—Korean business leaders praised Shen Yun Performing Arts, saying it brought energy to them and they felt very happy after attending the performance at the National Theater of Korea in Seoul on Feb. 15.

“My conclusion of Shen Yun’s experience has three points: it has super strong energy; the colors are very saturated and the color matches are very beautiful; and it has a very rich culture with diversity,” said Mr. Bang Jang-kyu, the sales director of CIL Multimodal Transport Group.Mr. Bang said that he enjoyed the dances very much and he admired Shen Yun’s dancers.

“The male dancers were very valiant and majestic. I felt super strong energy from them. It’s astounding,” he said. “Only men can have this kind of force and masculinity. I like it.”

He said the female dancers presented beauty.

“Shen Yun’s colors are richer than our Korean ones. Every single color is very beautiful. Especially when the female dancers dance, their costumes are simply gorgeous. They are fantastic!” he added.

As for diversity, Mr. Bang said Shen Yun costumes represent different dynasties in very different designs. The story-based dances told stories of different times and different regions. The program also presented very diverse cultures.
“Chinese culture is diverse. So, I felt I experienced so many different cultures in Shen Yun,” he said. “It made me feel very happy.”
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company, and has a mission to show the beauty and goodness of “China before communism.” For 5,000 years China’s civilization was built on values and virtues from the spiritual teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.
Mr. Bang is a Christian. He said he was happy to know the Chinese traditional values that are built upon ancient beliefs.

He said: “In the first program, the stage presented how Buddhas and Gods came to earth from heaven. Actually, I haven’t been in contact with this type of concept before. I’m a Christian, and I have a different understanding of divine beings. But it’s a very good thing to know these thoughts and concepts.”

Mr. Bang hoped Shen Yun would perform in more Korean cities.

“I believe Shen Yun will be welcomed in all Korean cities, not only in Busan and Seoul. Shen Yun should tour South Korea. This is very important [for Korean people],” he said.

The Shen Yun 2023 season will be its biggest yet, with its eight equally sized touring companies set to visit more than 180 cities across five continents. In South Korea, Shen Yun Performing Arts World Company has performed in Busan and Gumi. Seoul is its last stop in Korea.

‘I Felt the Stunning Beauty Immediately’

“It’s an amazing show,” said Ms. Kim Kyung-mi, the CEO of Kim’s Coffee, “It’s not only an excellent show. It shows the tradition, the connotation, and the potential of Chinese people. Shen Yun recovered the essence of Chinese culture and presented it to us.”

Ms. Kim was in awe at Shen Yun’s beauty.

“When the curtain first opened, I felt the stunning beauty immediately … It’s so dreamy,” she said. “The interaction between the backdrop and dancers is really amazing! It’s like being in a dream.”

Shen Yun has a patented dynamic backdrop, which not only extends the stage but also interacts with dancers. For example, dancers write poems on the backdrop, travel back and forth between the backdrop and the stage, and pick up or drop off props from/in the backdrop.

“I was touched deeply by Shen Yun. You know, all shows I attended before were so plain. Shen Yun is awesome. It’s a totally new experience,” she said.

Ms. Kim appreciated Shen Yun showing the world a complete China, which includes the China of history, the China of today, and China of the future.

Shen Yun showed us what the real China looks like and what the real China is, which I think is brilliant,” she said. “The current China lost all Chinese essence because of the Communist Party’s rule. Shen Yun also presented sympathy. I also feel pity for Chinese people.”

Ms. Kim said she changed her notions about China because of Shen Yun, “I think all audiences will treat China with a new angle.”

Each Shen Yun performance consists of nearly 20 vignettes, presented through highly-expressive art forms such as classical Chinese dance, original orchestral music performed live, soloists who sing in the bel canto tradition, animated digital backdrops, and more. And every year, Shen Yun puts on an all-new production, including new choreography, music, costumes, and backdrop sets.
