SAN FRANCISCO—Shen Yun Performing Arts performed at the SHN Orpheum Theatre on March 22 to a full house. Among those attending the performance were Kieran Harty, co-founder and CEO of tech company Tintri, and his son Sam Harty.
“It was very good, very good,” said Mr. Harty after watching the performance.
Mr. Harty says seeing Shen Yun was his first encounter with classical Chinese dance. It was an experience he described as “very enjoyable.”
New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts was founded in 2006 with the mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese culture.
“Very good. Very impressive … The colors were great,” Mr. Harty said.
Mr. Harty’s son, Sam, said he liked how the performance used a digital screen in the performance.
Shen Yun uses state of the art digital projection techniques in the performance, creating an animated background that is seamlessly connected to all other elements of the performance, such as the dance and music.
“I liked how they used the screen, like when they would jump down they would appear on the screen,” Sam said.
Part of Shen Yun’s performances is the depicting of mini-drama pieces, ranging from stories of ancient legends and the grandeur of bygone dynasties to present day China.
Mr. Harty said he enjoyed the piece about the Monkey King. The piece depicts part of the beloved Chinese novel Journey to the West, which tells the story of a monk’s adventures while on a quest for Buddhist scriptures.
