Shen Yun Shows Universal Values, Leaves Audience ‘In High Spirits,’ Says Theater Producer

MEXICO CITY—Guillermo Wiechers, a theater producer, saw Shen Yun Performing Arts with his family and said they had much to discuss after seeing the performance together.
We were talking about the importance of developing a show from universal spiritual values, talking about honesty, the value of community, and different values that every religion focuses on, but all regarding a universal superior order, and all of them being shared with an audience by means of a show that involves multimedia, and all of those values, well, are fundamental nowadays,” said Mr. Wiechers after seeing Shen Yun at Auditorio Nacional on May 5.
“We were commenting that we are leaving the venue in high spirits, but in a peaceful, quiet mood, because we deeply felt the music, we loved the scores.”
New York-based Shen Yun, formed in 2006, is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company. It has a mission of reviving 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through dance and music.

It made Mr. Wiechers think of his own heritage and traditions.

“I was thinking about Mexican tradition and how we have developed our own effort to share our values. And this is remarkable, what you do about saying there are no barriers, no matter the persecutions, no matter those kinds of limitations that any government can impose to push back the effort against history,” he said, referring to the fact that Shen Yun cannot be seen in China, where the ruling communist regime has tried to uproot traditional culture during its 70 years.
“The community, by means of arts, can make a message go forward. And actually, what we are politically living as Mexicans, being divided, it becomes an invitation for us, what can we rescue about our traditions? How can we come to develop a sense of community altogether? How can we go above this—and defeat individuality, thinking as one, only being as Mexicans.”
Mr. Wiechers wanted to congratulate these artists’ efforts.
Congratulations for these efforts that you are doing since 2006! For rescuing the values of Chinese tradition, this effort you do to produce a new generation of artists, of musicians, of performers, of dancers, and to spread the tradition, this 5,000-year-old tradition from China, well, it’s remarkable. Such a wonderful experience. Don’t give up!”
Congratulations on their discipline. There’s no way to go on stage or to go play an instrument if there’s no discipline, discipline of rehearsals, and discipline on what they eat and drink and so on, so they are a wonderful company. They love what they do.”
