Shen Yun Is ‘Raising Huge Awareness’ and ‘Reaching Huge Amounts of People,’ Says International Criminal Lawyer

LONDON—International criminal lawyer Eleanor Jane Stephenson is also a legal consultant for the International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China (ETAC). On April 14, she attended Shen Yun Performing Arts’ first of ten shows at Eventim Apollo.

Ms. Stephenson believed it was one of the best shows she had ever seen. “I’ve seen lots of ballet—some really good ballet—and this, I think, trumps it,” she said.

“It was incredible. All the dancers were beautiful. They were—so athletic—really impressive and just really nice to watch—I could have sat there for hours!”

Shen Yun was established in 2006 by leading Chinese artists who had fled the persecution of China’s communist regime.
Following the bloody communist takeover in 1947, Chinese culture went through a period of destruction. Now in the free world, these artists are seeking to revive the nation’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture and civilization.

Though Shen Yun has suffered continual harassment at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the New York-based performing arts company is welcomed and beloved worldwide.

“The artists are brave. I did ask a colleague of mine who knows a lot about the issue. The CCP is doing what I expected—they’re intimidating the dancers and the families of the dancers in China,” Ms. Stephenson said.

“They’re writing to the theaters and actually intimidating and threatening the theaters. I have heard stories of tires being slashed on the buses that the dancers are traveling in. [The artists] are very brave.”

Since its inception, Shen Yun has grown to include eight equally-large companies that perform simultaneously around the world. This year, the company is expected to visit over 180 cities across five continents.

Ms. Stephenson felt especially touched by the artists’ portrayal of human rights issues in China.

“Really impressed in particular to the forced organ harvesting [story-dance]—that was done really, really well. It will raise huge awareness and it’s obviously reaching huge amounts of people. That is just excellent,” she expressed.

“[Organ harvesting is] absolutely shocking and people don’t really know about it. I spend all day, every day trying to reach people. To see this number of people being reached every year is brilliant.”

She hoped that each time Shen Yun has a show, there will be tens of people that will contact organizations like ETAC and try to help.

Ms. Stephenson’s biggest takeaway from the evening was that “[Chinese] people feel suppressed by the communist party.”

“They are proud of their culture and they want to differentiate between the government of China and [the real] China,” she said. “They want people to know that they want people to help. They’re proud and they’re going to fight.”
