“There was definitely a spiritual component [in the performance] that I wasn’t expecting. It was really cool to see,” said Mr. Hildenbrand. “I’ve never been to China but I think it’s really important to understand their history. I didn’t realize [there would be so much] history showing tonight.”
For 5,000 years, Chinese citizens were very spiritual and had a deep belief in the divine. In fact, almost every aspect of Chinese life was governed by the teachings of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism.
Since its establishment in 2006, the New York-based Shen Yun has made it its mission to bring back China’s authentic traditional culture and share with everyone, through dance and music, the beauty of China before communism.
“I think [Shen Yun’s mission] is important. We should never forget the traditions of the past. It is what makes us who we are today,” said Mrs. Hildenbrand. “Learning about other cultures helps us to understand all different types of people. We’re all part of a bigger world.”
Upon learning during the evening that Shen Yun is currently forbidden by the Chinese Communist Party from performing in China, Mrs. Hildebrand said she wasn’t surprised.
“It doesn’t surprise me—knowing what I know about communism. It makes me sad for the people of China. Their culture is not allowed and people are missing out,” she said.
“It’s really important to have freedom of speech and freedom of religion. That’s not the case in China right now. I don’t think that’s right.”
The couple agreed that they would definitely be recommending Shen Yun to their friends and families.
“It was beautiful. Stunning choreography, beautiful music. We got cultured,” said Mrs. Hildenbrand. “There’s a lot of hope in the dances. [Shen Yun is reviving the tradition] of getting people together to tell stories.”
