PHOENIX—“If you haven’t seen it, come see it … it’s a wonderful production,” said retired Brigadier General Garry Bahling about Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Orpheum Theatre on Feb. 22.

“[I] absolutely love it, it’s an incredible experience,” he said, “I think the advertisements do it justice.”

“If you come see it, you'll want to come see it again,” he added, “Guaranteed!”

Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company. Along with folk dances and solo performances, the production depicts story-based pieces that tell tales from ancient times to the modern day.
Besides talented dancers, Shen Yun features a one-of-a-kind orchestra that blends traditional Chinese instruments into a classical Western orchestra.

“The music, the instrumentations [are] different than anything I’ve ever seen or heard,” he said. “All of it comes together to make it a truly unique experience.”

Commenting on the virtuoso vocalists who sing Chinese lyrics using the bel canto style, Mr. Bahling said the baritone was incredible.

“His expressions, his voice … magnificent!”

Shen Yun Performing Arts aims to revive China’s 5,000-year-old traditional culture. The age-old culture has been on the brink of extinction since the Chinese communist regime seized power in 1949. Shen Yun says its performance this year demonstrates “China before communism.”

Mr. Bahling said he truly resonated with Shen Yun’s message of good triumphing over evil.

“It resonated with me, that there is good [and] there’s evil—I like that the evil is atheism—and if you stick to tradition … to do what’s right … good things will happen for you,” he said.

Mr. Bahling felt that Shen Yun’s mission to revive tradition was “very relevant” to modern society.

“Look what’s happening in this world … what’s happing to the cities … how we get away from tradition … [and] from family values,” he said.

Mr. Bahling commented that the Shen Yun performers should be proud of their talent and their mission. “You make a lot of people happy,” he said, “keep doing it!”

“Oh, my heart is just overflowing with joy and happiness and love,” said Jennifer Flowers, a director at the Phoenix Zoo.

“The color, the beauty, the music … I felt the vibration and the emotion from the music, the songs, and the dance,” she added, “It emulated everything that’s divine.”

According to Shen Yun, ancient Chinese music, medicine, calligraphy, clothing, and language were believed to have been brought down from the heavens and daily life was replete with rituals connecting man with the divine.
Seated front row at the Orpheum Theatre, Ms. Flowers commented that she has wanted to see Shen Yun for years and from the moment the curtain opened, she was in tears.

“It took us back to our source—divine beings coming to the Earth to help mankind—and it was very powerful, moving me to tears,” she said, “It was beautiful, it connected with me instantly.”

“This is a kind of a show that reminds us of what we truly are,” she said.

“We forgot that we were divine beings … [Shen Yun] showed you can still remember who you are, and be the divine being … [and] there’s still hope and love and divinity.”
