LAUSANNE, Switzerland—With its medieval streets and its beautiful beaches and quays bordering Lake Geneva, Lausanne, in the Lake Geneva region of French-speaking Switzerland, enjoys an exceptional lifestyle.

This Monday, Jan. 16, the Théâtre Beaulieu welcomed to the stage for the third consecutive day the dancers, singers, and musicians of the famous Shen Yun Performing Arts.
Nicolas Cottier, a lawyer who practices in the Vaud region, was present this Monday with his wife, to live the experience of Shen Yun.

“Oh, I think it’s a wonderful show,” he said with great enthusiasm. “I was happy to be able to get tickets, to be able to get a seat here. It was really a pleasure so far to be a part of this show. Really beautiful!”

The self-proclaimed history enthusiast was happy to learn about traditional Chinese culture. “I have some Chinese culture books that I haven’t studied enough yet and this really makes me want to do that,” he said.

Indeed, Shen Yun brings to life the 5,000 years of traditional culture and history of ancient China: the heroes of traditional legends or the different ethnic groups that populated China unfold to the rhythm of Shen Yun’s orchestra, telling legends and stories and highlighting the values of courage, authenticity, and loyalty.

Discovering classical Chinese dance and music for the first time, the lawyer said he “really admired the performance of the dancers, the actors,” from whom he could feel a strong energy.

“It is precisely the mastery of this energy that is deployed ... all in control! This balance that is put forward in the show ... is fascinating,” he said.

Yet the emotion felt is “soothing,” Mr. Cottier said. “I find it very soothing ... You come out of this show very soothed. You get quite an eyeful but in a very calming way. It’s very, very romantic, and nice ... it’s really a very beautiful show.”

Shen Yun means in English “the beauty of the divine beings dancing.”  In its program, the audience can read that “in the past, China was once called the ”Land of the Divine,“ reflecting the belief in a glorious culture brought by the gods. People aimed for harmony between Heaven, Earth and humans, praised the divine, and respected the principles of nature.”

Shen Yun thus establishes a connection between humans and the divine, and this is something Mr. Cottier also felt, “I think that’s what the show is trying to convey and I think it does it well ... Yes, you can feel it well, you can feel it well.”

According to Mr. Cottier, the show conveys “a message of harmony, balance, gentleness,” and is a great resource for discovering Chinese history and traditional culture.

“I am a history enthusiast,” says the lawyer. “So of course, referring to thousands of years is always something that touches me.”
