MADISON, Wisc.—“It’s quite a show. Fantastic, the choreography is fantastic,” said Jim Schutz, an investment advisor. “It’s just kind of an amazing performance. …It is something you don’t see every day.”
Mr. Schutz is referring to the world premier classical dance and music company, Shen Yun Performing Arts, which held its first of two performances in Madison at the Overture Center for the Arts on Tuesday, May 7.
“Shen Yun was formed in 2006 in New York from a group of leading classical Chinese artists with one wish: to revive the true, divinely inspired culture of China and share it with the world,” states the Shen Yun website.
This culture was almost completely destroyed from the 80 plus years of communist rule in China. Since Shen Yun is based in New York, it has the freedom to display this 5,000 years of culture. It does so in two and a half hours of mini-dramas, presented through classical Chinese dance.
“We tried to pick up on the history, a lot of the stories and the culture. I’m sure there’s a lot more to learn though,” he said.
Mr. Schutz was impressed with the female dancers, the costumes, and the choreography.
“Everything … was just fantastic. How they pull that all off … It’s just amazing. The color and the grace of it all was just beautiful.”
He concluded by saying that he would “absolutely” recommend Shen Yun to his friends.
