“Children are our most vulnerable, precious Texans and deserve to be put first. Yet, President Biden has turned a blind eye to parents across America who are facing the nightmare of a nationwide baby formula shortage,” said Republican Gov. Gregg Abbott and National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd in a statement.
On Thursday, Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) said she received photos showing stocked shelves with baby formula at a holding center in Hidalgo, Texas. The lawmaker said a Border Patrol agent sent her the photos and was concerned amid a reported shortage of formula nationwide.
“This is yet another one in a long line of reckless, out-of-touch priorities from the Biden Administration when it comes to securing our border and protecting Americans,” said Abbott, a Republican, and Judd in their statement. “Our children deserve a president who puts their needs and survival first–not one who gives critical supplies to illegal immigrants before the very people he took an oath to serve.”
Other congressional Republicans, meanwhile, have said that they’ve received no response from the administration or Food and Drug Administration since February.
“We shouldn’t be rationing formulas to keep their babies fed,” Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) and other lawmakers said in a news conference Thursday. “Some families rely on specific formula. I talked with one mom who has a baby with allergies and it’s extremely difficult. She feels like she’s playing Russian roulette as she goes to the store. President Biden and the FDA must do more. This is a matter of life or death.”
The White House told reporters Thursday that President Biden is scheduled to meet with retailers and formula producers.
“We recognize that many consumers have been unable to access infant formula,” FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf said in a statement this week. “We are doing everything in our power to ensure there is adequate product available where and when they need it.”
