KITCHENER-WATERLOO, Canada—Virginia Young is carrying her third child, but before the baby arrives, her husband, Jim, President of KW Countertops, took her on a date—a journey to ancient China at the Shen Yun Performing Arts opening show at Centre in the Square theatre.

“The colour is amazing, the dancing is amazing. It’s very good, I am enjoying it,” said Mr. Young.

Mr. Young’s business, KW Countertop, fabricates custom countertops, retail and wholesale, in a 20,000-square-foot facility that serves customers from Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, and surrounding areas.

“I got these tickets for my wife for Christmas. It’s a night out for us,” Mr. Young said. “We have two kids and another one on the way, so she needs a little time away.”

Virginia Young works at the University of Waterloo’s Student Success Office as Director, Outreach and Engagement.

“The show so far is pretty amazing,” she said.

“The dancing is pretty cool. It is very different than anything I have ever seen before.”

Shen Yun presents classical Chinese dance with the support of a unique orchestra combining classical Eastern and Western instruments.

Along with dances inspired by beloved Chinese novels and legendary tales, Shen Yun also presents dances from China’s diverse ethnicities and folk dances from the majority Han ethnicity.

Friend Tony Hummell approached while the couple was sharing their thoughts.

“Spectacular, spiritual, the costumes are awesome,” said Mr. Hummell. “It’s captivating.”

Mr. Hummell works in Field Services for the RCMP.

Shen Yun will be in Kitchener-Waterloo for one more performance before heading to Toronto’s Sony Centre for the Performing Arts for a five-show run.
