PHILADELPHIA—Behind the beautiful dance and music presented by Shen Yun Performing Arts is a great amount of hard work. The result is a wonderful stage of splendor and highly skilled artists.

“I can’t imagine how long it takes to rehearse something like this. The orchestra is very good too. All the computer-generated effects. The animation is fantastic,” said Jack Flood, manager of a manufacturing company.

Shen Yun’s dancers are trained in classical Chinese dance. While dancing looks spectacular on stage, the artists must put in an intense amount of effort to make everything they do look effortless.

“It shows discipline and people doing something they are passionate about. You can see the work that went into this is just beautiful. The costumes are lovely. It’s perfect,” said Cathy Flood, a retired teacher and Mr. Flood’s wife.

Although Shen Yun is reviving traditional Chinese culture, it cannot perform in China. Many people from China take the opportunity to see Shen Yun when they travel overseas.

“Many of our neighbors are Chinese and I can’t wait to talk with them about this,” said Mrs. Flood.

Traditional Chinese culture held the same values as many other cultures around the world. It was only after the Chinese Communist Party took power that China became unrecognizable. Shen Yun is reminding audiences that China before communism is the true China.

“How wonderful it is. It’s something we would have in common. It’s their culture and it’s beautiful,” said Mrs. Flood.

“It’s well worth going to. It’s something different. Something you wouldn’t normally see,” added Mr. Flood.

Mrs. Flood added that seeing Shen Yun allowed her to understand other cultures.

“We don’t know enough about each other and this shows people what other cultures are like,” she said.

Shen Yun’s digital backdrop is able to endlessly extend the stage. This patented use of the backdrop allows the artists to dive deep into the sea and fly high into the sky.

“When the people disappear and then fly, that’s wonderful,” said Mrs. Flood.

“It adds to the performance. It’s so much better than just a beautiful backdrop. It changes. It’s impressive,” she added.

Shen Yun’s dancers are also skilled in the different ethnic dance styles across China.

“The Himalayas, the snow. It was very spirited. It was beautiful,” said Mrs. Flood regarding the Tibetan dance.
“The women were so graceful and lovely.”
