A mother and father have identified themselves to police after their two toddlers were found alone in a Detroit motel. The 24-year-old mother has since been arrested for child neglect.
One child — a one-year-old girl —was on one of the beds, while a seven-month-old boy other was found in a crib. Both had dirty diapers and were suffering from some skin rashes.
Police found the abandoned children entirely by accident.
An adult male who was walking through the motel parking lot heard the sounds of an argument, and then gunshots. An instant later, he felt a sharp pain in his back.
Police arrived to find investigate, and sent the man who had been injured to a local hospital. He is in a critical condition.
During their investigation, police also found a bullet hole in the window of room 119.
When they entered the room, they found the children.
The Detroit Police Child Abuse Section organised for child protective services to collect the children, who were not injured during the shooting incident.
Both parents came forward to police voluntarily. According to the police, the pair had two children together; the one-year-old girl and another child who is already in the father’s custody. The man has offered to take custody of his daughter, as well as the seven-month-old boy.
Police are still investigating the situation.
