What Is Gained by Dueling Border Visits?

Last week, Joe Biden and Donald Trump visited two areas in Texas along the border with Mexico. Mr. Biden visited Brownsville with Customs & Border Protection (CBP) officials, while Mr. Trump accompanied Gov. Greg Abbott at Eagle Pass. Since Mr. Abbott has taken the initiative to better secure the Texas border, much of the unlawful migration has shifted to Arizona and California.

Meanwhile, Mr. Newsom is doing his utmost to lay out the welcome mat for lawbreaking immigrants due to California’s status as a sanctuary state. His pandering strategy redistributes social services to lawless immigrants instead of serving taxpaying Americans.

Obviously, any visit from a current president and former president will generate attention. Mr. Trump has been to the border a number of times, while Mr. Biden usually has “more important things” to do than face up to stark reality. What is more important than ordered liberty and national security? Mr. Biden offered up empty platitudes about immigrant “newcomers” during his visit, but there were no credible actions promised to secure the porous border.

Unsurprisingly, Mr. Biden used the visit as a cynical ploy to make it appear as if he’s concerned about border security, when he has been missing in action for three years. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has lied to Congress and insisted that the border is secure. Out of thin air, he and Mr. Biden now claim to care deeply about the border crisis, but why change course now?

They are a day late and a dollar short, and talk is cheap. The bipartisan backlash to the administration’s dereliction of duty has reached a boiling point, and an election is on the horizon, so has Mr. Biden suddenly seen the light? Perhaps, but it’s more likely that he refuses to take responsibility for the border anarchy. For three years, he has broken his presidential oath to protect America from foreign adversaries, and that is morally bankrupt.

Mr. Biden blames Republicans for the porous border, yet with an executive order he could authorize a border closure and restore the “stay in Mexico” policy of his predecessor. That policy was effective during Mr. Trump’s watch, because asylum case documents had to be genuine prior to the immigration process. Indeed, no Congressional action is required now to secure the border, as current laws are sufficient.

Unfortunately, the Biden administration has lowered the bar for asylum consideration and raised the bar for deportation, and illegal immigrants escalated their stampede toward the border. Moreover, from 2021–2023, CBP encounters with illegal immigrants increased each year, yet only a small percentage of those encounters were deported each of the three years.
The catch and release policy has been a disaster for America’s cities and towns due to the lawless immigrant influx. Mr. Biden has placed unvetted illegal immigrants in the front of the immigration line, yet they may have little understanding of how to be respectful guests. Adding to this unsustainable humanitarian and national security crisis, there are about two million “gotaways” whose identity and whereabouts are a mystery.

Mr. Biden’s catch and release policy should have been reversed. Any immigrant without legitimate asylum claims would be caught and then released back to Mexico instead of into the U.S. That policy could help undercut the power of the cartels that generate huge profits through the export of child labor, drugs, and human trafficking.

Securing the border would also help to reduce violent criminal activities carried out by young lawless gangs in this country. The diabolical murder of Laken Riley is a blaring wake-up call for enhanced border security, and for better coordination between the DHS and local/state law enforcement agencies.

Some Democrats claim that overall “undocumented” immigrant crime rates are lower than crime statistics for citizens and legal immigrants. Whether or not the crime figures are higher, lower, or the same has nothing to do with implementing rational border security policies. Why take the chance of more crime and terrorism by inviting millions of unvetted illegal immigrants to pour in at the border? America already has multiple challenges to confront without exacerbating economic and social strains.

Congress wants to help some allies defend their sovereignty and defeat tyranny, yet the Biden administration refuses to secure the Southern border. Why would our allies trust us to assist them when our own national sovereignty is threatened by illegal migration? When Mr. Biden opened the floodgates at the border, it was reminiscent of the Mariel boatlift of 1980.

In 1980, Fidel Castro exported a number of murderers and psychopaths from Cuba’s mental facilities and prisons while allowing about 125,000 people to emigrate to Florida, which had to process them. President Jimmy Carter helped to facilitate this event, and his reelection defeat to Ronald Reagan that fall hinged upon his mishandling of this migration exodus from Cuba. It’s possible that Mr. Biden could suffer the same fate, because his border fiasco is one of the top issues leading up to the national election.

Even if Mr. Biden shuts down the border for the next several months and is reelected, what guarantee would Americans have that he would beef up border security for the next four years? The safety of Americans should never depend on a political calculus. Mr. Biden should have carried out his constitutional duties to place American lives above political games.

At this juncture, Americans don’t need sanitized border visits. They need all hands on deck to turn back unlawful immigrants and speed up the legal immigration process with additional court judges and Customs officers. We need common sense border policies that reflect the will of the people, in order to uphold the rule of law and our longterm security. America’s future is at stake.
