Officials Take BMW From GoFundMe Couple Accused of Taking $400,000 From Homeless Veteran

Investigators executed a search warrant on Sept. 6 at the home of a New Jersey couple who have been accused of stealing money from a homeless Philadelphia man after raising $400,000 via GoFundMe.

Officials could be seen searching and then removing a black BMW in the driveway at the home of Kate McClure and Mark D'Amico in Burlington County, New Jersey.

“Due to the enormous public interest in this matter, I am confirming that a search warrant was executed early this morning by the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office and the Florence Township Police Department at the residence of Mark D'Amico and Katelyn McClure in connection with a criminal investigation into the Johnny Bobbitt matter,” Burlington County Prosecutor Scott A. Coffina wrote in a statement to ABC7 in New York.

He added: “As of this time, there have been no charges filed. Further updates will be provided as circumstances warrant.”

D'Amico was at home during the search and was seen swinging a golf club and playing with a dog. McClure was also there for a short while, but she left without answering reporters’ inquiries, the ABC affiliate report said.

A lawyer for John Bobbitt, the homeless man, said he learned that the money was all gone.

McClure and D'Amico started a GoFundMe account after Bobbitt, a veteran, spent his last $20 to help McClure out after she ran out of gas on Interstate 95 in 2017. The incident became a viral sensation, and hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised for him.

“Johnny sits on the side of the road every day, holding a sign,” McClure wrote on the GoFundMe page. “He saw me pull over and knew something was wrong. He told me to get back in the car and lock the doors. A few minutes later, he comes back with a red gas can.”

Dispute

Later, it was reported that the couple said they gave Bobbitt $200,000, but he said that he only received $75,000 in cash, goods, and services. The man said that the couple spent the cash on vacations, shopping sprees, a BMW, and gambling.

“I wish it didn’t come to this,” Bobbitt said on Aug. 31 about taking legal action against the couple, ABC News reported. “I hate that it came to this.”

The couple previously alleged that Bobbitt used most of his money to purchase drugs.

“Every dollar he ever touched was used for drugs,” D‘Amico said, according to ABC. “That’s why it took so long for us to finally have to say, ’No' when it came time for him asking for money when we knew where it was going. I wanted to make sure that at the end of the day, when he was ready to, he had something left.”

They said that Bobbitt still has about $150,000 in a bank account, and they have been working to get a trustee to manage his money.

“That’s what we’re in the process of doing now,” D'Amico said. “And we’re in the process of having everything looked over by our lawyer and he [Bobbitt] has his separate lawyer and he will have his own trust and it will be out of our hands.”
