Noshir Gowadia, Former B-2 Bomber engineer, 66, was found guilty on August 9 of providing defense information and services to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Five of Noshir Gowadia’s criminal offenses are related to him helping the CCP design a stealth cruise missile. The low signature missiles have exhaust systems that make them undetectable by conventional infrared missiles, making them difficult to destroy.

The Maui resident was also convicted of three counts of providing classified, technical information; illegally keeping defense information; and filing false tax returns.

“Mr. Gowadia provided some of our country’s most sensitive weapons-related designs to the Chinese government for money,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security David Kris in a press release. “Today, he is being held accountable for his actions.”

After the 40-day trial in Hawaii, the verdict against Gowadia was announced by Kris and U.S. Attorney for the District of Hawaii Florence Nakakuni. Sentencing is set for November 22, 2010.

Gowadia is facing life in prison for each of two counts of providing the CCP with classified national defense information, ten years in prison for each of nine various other charges, five years for conspiracy to violate the Arms Export Control Act, and three years for each of two counts of filing false tax returns.

“The United States entrusts people with important and sensitive information critical to our nation’s defense. Today’s verdict demonstrates that there is a serious consequence to betraying that trust,” said Nakakuni in a press release.

Gowadia was arrested in October, 2005 for allegedly communicating national defense information. He was later charged with additional violations in indictments in 2005, 2006, and 2007, according to the Department of Justice (DoJ).

He was an engineer with Northrop Grumman Corporation from 1968 to 1986, and worked on the stealth propulsion system for the B-2 Spirit “Stealth” bomber. He worked on other classified projects with the U.S. government until 1997.

It was found that Gowadia took six trips to China 2003 and 2005, where he provided the CCP with designs, test support, and data which was used to help the CCP develop its cruise missile system, according to the DoJ.

He was paid at least $110,000 by the CCP, and was using “three foreign entities he controlled, including a Liechtenstein charity purportedly for the benefit of children, to disguise the income he received from foreign countries,” says a DoJ press release.
