The mother of an 11-year-old boy who was shot by a police officer responding to a domestic disturbance call at her home in Mississippi is demanding that body camera footage be released and the officer is fired.

Aderrien Murry was shot in the chest by Indianola Police Department officer Greg Capers in the early hours of the morning on May 20 as he responded to a domestic disturbance at the home, his mother Nakala Murry, and family attorney Carlos Moore said.

The young boy was unarmed and following instructions from Capers, according to Moore.

He was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment and released on Wednesday.

According to CNN, the younger Murry was placed on a ventilator after suffering from a collapsed lung, fractured ribs, and a lacerated liver from the shooting.
Speaking to ABC News on Thursday, Murry’s mother said her son had called the police to their home after she was threatened by a man at 4 a.m. According to Nakala Murry, the man—her daughter’s father—had knocked on her window and appeared to be “irate.”
“I noticed he was kind of irate. And from dealing with him in the past, I know the irate version of him, what it could lead to,” she said.

‘I Don’t Wanna Die’

Amid concerns about the man’s behavior, Nakala said she told her son to call his grandmother on the phone, which he did. He also called the police and informed them of the situation, according to the older Murry.

Two officers subsequently responded to the home in Indianola, roughly 100 miles northwest of Jackson, the state’s capital city, at which point they told Murry to open the front door.

“My child’s father was still there, he was like, ‘Don’t open the door.’ I was telling him that I’m going to open the door,” she said. “He ran toward the back” at which point the police “started kicking on the door with their foot, like they were trying to break it down.”

“I opened the door. When I opened it, [an officer’s] gun was up. He was telling me to come out,” she said. “I went out, I got out of the way. I walked out toward the end of my driveway where my mom was. And I heard a shot and I saw my son run out toward where we were.”

“He fell, bleeding,” she said. “I put pressure on it to stop, help stop the bleeding.”

The mother added that her son told her “I don’t wanna die” as he lay on the ground.

Officer Suspended

Murry’s daughter and 2-year-old nephew were also at home at the time of the shooting, she told CNN.

The incident was captured on police body camera video, according to Murry, who is calling for the footage to be released. She also called for the officer to be fired and prosecuted for aggravated assault.

“We’re demanding justice,” Moore said. “We want immediate termination. We want prosecution and we want the family to get some answers.”

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is probing the incident. Indianola Mayor Ken Featherstone told ABC News that Capers has been suspended.

Moore also said on Twitter that the officer has been suspended.

“No officers were injured during the incident. A minor occupant of the residence received significant injuries and has been transported to a local hospital,” MBI said in an emailed statement to The Epoch Times.

“MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.”

The Epoch Times has contacted the Indianola Police Department.
