The Trump campaign announced on Nov. 8 that Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) will lead the campaign’s recount team in Georgia.
The recount in the state is expected to start as soon as canvassing is completed.
“We are concerned about the lack of transparency in the tabulation process, especially given the reports of irregularities and improper ballot harvesting in Georgia,” Matt Morgan, the Trump campaign’s general counsel. “In order for Americans to have full faith and confidence in our elections, every legal vote must be counted and every illegal or fraudulent vote must be excluded.”
Former Vice President Joe Biden held a 10,353-vote lead over incumbent President Donald Trump in Georgia as of 9:15 p.m. on Sunday with nearly all of the votes counted.
At least three Georgia counties experienced glitches with the Dominion Voting software, Gwinnett, Spalding, and Morgan. In Antrim County, Michigan, the same software erroneously handed the winning number of votes to the Democrats.
“Republicans stand by the ideal that every eligible voter should be able to vote legally and have it be counted,” Collins said in a statement. “During the coming recount, we are confident we will find evidence of improperly harvested ballots and other irregularities that will prove that President Trump won Georgia fairly again on his way to re-election as President.”
The Georgia secretary of state has said that the slim margin in the presidential vote counts was sure to lead to a recount. Under state law, an aggrieved party can request a recount if the certified results of the election have a margin of 0.5 percent or less. The state doesn’t have a deadline for when a recount must be complete.
With recounts pending in Georgia and Wisconsin, and a growing number of lawsuits from the Trump campaign, Biden declared himself the winner of the election on Saturday. Trump has rejected the idea and attributed Biden’s reported lead in several states to fraud.
“Joe Biden has not been certified as the winner of any states, let alone any of the highly contested states headed for mandatory recounts, or states where our campaign has valid and legitimate legal challenges that could determine the ultimate victor,” Trump said in a statement.
“The American People are entitled to an honest election: that means counting all legal ballots, and not counting any illegal ballots. This is the only way to ensure the public has full confidence in our election,” the president added.
