Mary Katherine Smart, the sister of Kristen Smart--who was abducted in 2002 and spend nine months in captivity--spoke about she stayed still so she wouldn’t get kidnapped.
Mary Katherine, 20, and her family talked to NBC’s Meredith Vieira on Friday night, describing the situation.
“If he realizes I’m awake, maybe he'll take me as well and then my family will never know what happened to us,” she recalled.
Mary Katherine said that in the middle of the night, a man threatened her sister with a knife.
“I felt immediately awake. I could feel or sense my sister lying in bed next to me, she was asleep. I was so scared,” she said.
Her sister, who was 14 at the time, was kidnapped by Brian David Mitchell, who was sentenced in 2011 for two life terms. His partner, Wanda Barzee, got 15 years in prison.
Smart, who was taken to California and then back to her native Utah, was eventually found when a passerby noticed something odd.
Mary Katherine played a critical role in finding her sister, providing details about what the suspect looked like, which was then released to America’s Most Wanted.
