COSTA MESA, Calif.—Detectives arrested a 20-year-old man in the shooting death of a 38-year-old man in Costa Mesa, authorities said July 4.

The Costa Mesa Police Department received calls of gunshots heard in the 2000 block of Sterling Alley, near Pomona Avenue, at about 10:45 p.m. Monday, police said.

Arriving officers found the victim on a sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers started life-saving efforts including CPR and the use of an AED machine.

Costa Mesa Fire and Rescue paramedics responded and rushed the man to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he died as a result of his injuries.

The victim was identified as Jonathan Ray Valdez of Costa Mesa, police said.

On Tuesday, detectives arrested Ryan Rosas of Costa Mesa in connection with the death of Valdez. They also allegedly recovered the weapon suspected to have been used in the homicide.

“This was an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety,” police said.

Anyone with further information about the death was urged to contact Detective Kris Moore at 714-754-4986, [email protected], or Sgt. Jose Morales at 714-754-4933.
