A 30-year-old man was hospitalized on Sept. 14 after he fell into a fuel tank at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) personnel responded to a 911 call around 12:30 a.m. from FedEx employees at the airport where a colleague of theirs had fallen into the confines of a fuel tank.

“We got a call ... for a confined space rescue,” LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart told The Epoch Times. “One person working inside a fuel tank was extricated and transported directly.”

The man, whose identity was not released, was doing maintenance work in the vicinity of the fuel tank when he became unconscious before falling in, according to the LAFD.

He was unconscious while rescuers extracted him from the tank. There have been no further updates to his condition, according to the LAFD.

Five co-workers who responded to the incident with an attempted rescue were also evaluated by LAFD personnel on site and were not expected to be hospitalized.

“They were involved in trying to rescue the person, so they were just evaluated for any medical concerns,” Stewart said.

While the victim was reported to be a maintenance worker, it is not clear what type of maintenance was being conducted during the time of the incident.
