SAN PEDRO, Calif.—A man fell nearly 50 feet to his death Jan. 25 on the deck of a cargo ship at the Port of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded at 4:45 p.m. to the port and found that a man had fallen about 50 feet from the “superstructure” of the cargo ship, according to the agency.

“Firefighters/paramedics initiated resuscitative measures but sadly, the man was beyond medical help,” according to fire department spokesman Nicholas Prange.

It was unclear what caused the man to fall, according to the agency.

The Coast Guard was notified and the investigation will be handed over to Port Police, the department reported.
