A 64-year-old man was killed May 8 after being struck by a train in Irvine, according to authorities.

Irvine Police and the Orange County Fire Authority responded to the area of 170 Technology Dr. at 7:36 a.m. Monday after a report of a pedestrian being struck by a northbound Metrolink train, according to a statement from Irvine police.

The train’s engineer saw the man on wooden planks near the tracks, slowed down, and alerted him to get out of the way with the train’s horn, according to the statement. The man moved to turn away, but ultimately was hit, authorities said.

Michael Mason, likely a transient, was pronounced dead at the scene, Irvine police spokesperson Officer Karie Davies told The Epoch Times. His last known address was Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

There were 67 passengers on board the train when the incident occurred, but no other injuries were reported, Davies said.

Anyone with information about the deceased is urged to call Irvine police at 949-724-7000.
