A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck northwestern Argentina near the border with Chile late on Jan. 18, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake had a depth of about 20 km, and the epicenter was about 29 km southwest of Porcito, Argentina, according to a preliminary report from the USGS.
A magnitude 5.0 aftershock took place nearby about 15 minutes later, according to the agency.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System said no tsunami warning has been issued for the earthquake, and there were no immediate reports of any casualties.
Media outlets in Argentina reported that electricity failed in the region around Porcito and some goods were shaken from supermarket shelves, according to TRT World.
