An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 struck the Chile-Argentina border region Saturday night, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
The earthquake, 30 kilometers east of Chile’s capital of Santiago, was recorded at 9:07 p.m. local time from an epicenter of approximately 110 kilometers depth, the survey said.
It came less than an hour after a major 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck in Antarctica at 8:36 p.m., 216 kilometers northeast of Chile’s O'Higgins scientific research base.
The Chilean government issued a tsunami warning for all coastal regions of Chile, which was later said to have been sent in error.
