The creation of the Prius 2020 Edition marks Toyota’s celebration for 20 years of hybrid vehicles in the United States.
Since 2000, more than 1.9 million Prius vehicles have been sold in the US, 6 million Prius vehicles have been sold worldwide, and more than 3.6 million total hybrid models (including Lexus) sold in the U.S.
For 20 years, Prius was the car to buy if you wanted a “fuel sipping vehicle.” To celebrate this milestone, just 2,020 of this anniversary special editions will be built for the 2021 model year.
Prius 2020 Edition will be based on the 2021 XLE FWD trim. There will be two colors to choose from — Supersonic Red or the new Wind Chill Pearl — with unique Black Out Trim added on top. The distinguishing outside features include black 17-inch five-spoke wheels with black inserts and lug nuts, black mirrors, black badges, darkened headlight trim, and a body-colored rear deck spoiler.
The interior also gets a similar dark treatment, including a black shifter knob, black interior A-pillars, and smoked HVAC vents. There are also special “2020” insignia key glove and floor mats.
Based on the 2021 Prius XLE FWD trim, the 2020 Edition comes with heated SofTex-trimmed eight-way power driver’s seat, and SofTex-trimmed heated tilt/telescopic steering wheel. The trim also includes three-door Smart Key system with Push Button Start, and remote illuminated entry. Qi wireless phone charging tray that accommodates large phones, and a rear wiper are also included.
The 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with 6 speakers comes with the numerous features, like AM/FM Radio, CD player, Bluetooth capability, and USB connectivity. Versatile smart device integration is provided through Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa support.
Like all 2021 Toyotas, the New Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) 2.0 is standard on the Prius 2020 Edition. Features include Pre-Collision System with Low-Light Pedestrian Detector, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Bicyclist Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, and Road Sign Assist.
The Prius conventional hybrid family is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine paired with two motor-generators battery-driven electric motor, sending power to the front wheels via electronically-controlled continuous variable transmission (CVT). With rear seats folded, the 50.7 cubic feet of cargo space offers more room than some SUVs.
Estimated fuel economy is 54 mpg city and 50 mpg highway for a combined 52-mpg average.
The Prius hybrid is roomy, and thanks to its powertrain and the aerodynamic body “boasting a 0.24 drag coefficient,” the name remains synonymous with “practicality” and “fuel efficiency.”
Prius 2020 Edition is now in dealer’s showrooms, with an MSRP of $29,875. This places the 2020 Edition just below the $32,650 Limited trim in the lineup.
Remember there are only 2,020 vehicles produced.
The original Prius was the first successful hybrid on the market and has led to 11 Toyota electrified models for 2021.
