Incidents of animal cruelty have recently been on the rise and the number of animal abuse cases around the world has become alarming. Some people need to mend their ways by stopping these horrendous acts by finding compassion in their hearts and being more responsible for their pets.

In a recent incident, two scared puppies were found abandoned outside a rescue center tied to a fence with razor wires in Jackson, Mississippi.

The pups were yelping in pain. One of the puppies suffered from a deep wound as the sharp wire was wrapped around his leg and made a cut. It needed immediate medical attention according to Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) director Elizabeth Jackson, as per KXLF.
Luckily, Pippa Jackson, a worker at the ARF, came across the terrified pups on the morning of Tuesday, July 2, while she was taking a walk. Moved by their plight, she quickly documented the abuse with photos and shared it on Facebook, writing, “I hate people. And one will need immediate vet care because the [expletive] tied them with wire.”

She further added: “It is a holiday, all vets are full with boarding, and we owe all our vets tons. Looks like they tied them to our gate at 9:18 last night and a police officer drove by while they were doing it.”

She then freed the suffering animals and admitted them to the Animal Rescue Fund of Mississippi. The pups were rushed to the emergency veterinary care.

Both the pups are on medication and are recovering. The puppy with the deep leg wound will not need his leg cut off as per an update by the ARF on their Facebook page. Both will eventually be placed in foster care and hopefully then go to loving homes.

Surveillance cameras have captured the pups being tied up as a police car drove past, but the person involved hasn’t been identified. ARF has also raised over US$1,000 for the pups’ medical care.

However, the recent sad story of “puppy doe” reminds us that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated, and if abusers are caught, they stand to serve a lengthy jail sentence. The pit-bull mix puppy was found abandoned in a playground in 2013 in Quincy, Massachusetts, starving, and had suffered horrific abuse. She had sustained a fractured skull and spine, a stab wound to one eye, and a split tongue. In fact, her injuries were so severe she couldn’t be saved and had to be euthanized.

Her previous owner, a then-37-year-old Polish native, Radoslaw Czerkawski, was charged with 12 counts of animal abuse. Czerkawski was on a student visa when he had purchased the dog, named Kiya, from Craigslist in 2013. Czerkawski claimed that the dog had run away and someone else had inflicted the injuries on her. However, the court found him guilty of animal abuse including torturing and abandoning an animal. His sentence of 8 to 10 years imprisonment and 2 years probation will serve as a warning to others who commit these atrocious crimes.

“Today was a historic day for animal welfare in Massachusetts,” said Mary Nee, president of Animal Rescue League of Boston. “With the conviction and sentencing of Radoslaw Czerkawski, it has been demonstrated that people who commit animal cruelty, and in this case extreme cruelty, will be held accountable. Ironically, Puppy Doe’s short and tragic life was the impetus for stronger laws protecting all animals in the Commonwealth—and there’s still work to do.”

He has also been banned from owning or coming close to any animal.
