One caring pup ended up being the hero of the day after helping a little prickly fella in need. Rosie is a Cocker Spaniel and bulldog-cross, which not only gave her good looks but brains as well!
The clever dog was playing in her backyard in Nuneaton, England, on Aug. 27, 2018, when she noticed one hedgehog firmly stuck in a drain.

Had it been anything but a prickly creature, Rosie might have been able to give it a helping paw or two! But she obviously had great respect for the spiny critter, and opted to alert her owner Lorna Back, who was busy in the kitchen, that something was amiss.
Rosie was persistent in running into the house then running back to the drain until Lorna took notice. Lorna followed Rosie outside, and when she summed up the situation, she called the RSPCA.

Inspector Herchy Boal, who features on The Dog Rescuers TV show, arrived to help the little critter.
“I was worried because I knew there was water down the drain and could hear him gurgling. I didn’t want him to drown so I was trying to keep his face away from the water," Herchy added.

Herchy said he had a hard time getting his hand down to the hedgehog with his protective gloves, so he improvised and “tried using a skipping rope to try lift him up a bit.”
After almost 45 minutes, Herchy got his hand round Spike. As the tired critter relaxed a bit, Herchy hoisted him to safety.
“It was a relief and it was all thanks to Rosie that he was found in the first place,” said Herchy.

Talking about how happy the adorable Rosie was, Lorna said: “When the hedgehog was out, Rosie ran round the garden like a puppy. She seemed very pleased with herself.”
“We made sure she got a big fuss and some doggy treats for her efforts,” she added.
What a smart pooch! Thanks to Rosie, the little Spike is all safe now!
