Company Mocks Fussy Client Requests, Shows What Ad Looks Like With All Their Ideas
Updated:
Everyone thinks they have the best ideas for how to advertise products whether or not they have any training. Companies often consult customers on new ways to package and present products, even getting help with branding as Manchester City’s soccer team did a couple of years ago, asking fans what kind of website they wanted their team to have.
But sometimes there are just too many ideas to fit in one ad and have it still make any sense. This was proven a couple of years ago when Nissin, the Japanese company that pioneered ramen cup noodles, showed its loyal customers exactly what would happen if a demanding client’s wacky suggestions were all shoved into one ad! They posted a series of “edits” on Twitter requested by a very demanding boss that had people cracking up.

The company started with a simple ad featuring an ordinary-looking young woman with brown hair in a green park, holding a cup of the company’s newest product, “Milk Seafood Noodles.” Behind the woman, kids are running and playing on the grass, and even further in the background, we can see a cityscape that might be Tokyo or any other big city in Japan.

Though the ad is pretty straightforward, the “boss” isn’t happy with it and has lots of revisions for the poor designers to do. Facebook user Kimiko Foo posted a translation of the boss yelling at the designer: “I want more cheese! MORE CHEESE!!”

Some of the suggestions are pretty reasonable: “smile more” and “make the product stand out more.” They get a bit weirder when it comes to changing the woman’s hair color from the standard black many Japanese women have to something “more cheese kind of feeling.”

When it comes to the background, however, the designer has a lot of challenges. “Can you show that even NON-HUMANS also love our product?” is pretty out there, as is asking for “more of a farm kind of feel.”

The poor designers try to make all the changes the client wants, but it’s not enough. In the next edit, the girl’s hair has been changed to bright yellow in accordance with the boss’s wishes for “more cheese.” A surreal red barn and fence have been added to make it look like a farm, and instead of just humans appreciating cup noodles, there are now some pigs and a panda bear munching on bamboo.

Despite all the changes, the client still isn’t happy. Their demands explode exponentially, including noticing that woman’s right hand is empty: “make her hold a laptop.” More criticisms of the design also follow: “Why does the sky look gloomy? and that the pigs that the designer added in the foreground don’t relate to the ad. ”Make the pigs sleep.”

The requests spiral off into seriously wacky territory with a demand that even extraterrestrials be brought in. “Show that even aliens are also jealous of our product.”

The final edit is completely bizarre, with the green tree having become bare in the winter snow, the birds made to look like the Twitter symbol, a panda and a cow holding cups of noodles in their hands, a UFO beaming up cows, and a pile of gloopy, melted cheese running off the girl’s left hand, while in her right she holds a laptop.

Suffice to say, designers all over the internet were really happy to show ordinary people the pressures that they often face from their bosses and customers, and how simple is almost always better!
