Dogs truly are man’s best friends, even when their owners probably don’t deserve the loyalty their pooches show.

While some dogs have earned fame for staying with owners who were injured or even killed, refusing to leave their side, a story from last summer in Colombia showed that no matter what you do, your dog will always have your back, even if you’re on your back.

The video, posted by Yahoo News, shows a man in a motorcycle helmet sleeping in the middle of the street, while other drivers, pedestrians, and finally, the traffic police, attempt to wake him up. At first, it’s not clear if the man is injured. He lies in the middle of the street without moving.

As a pedestrian reaches down to check and make sure he’s okay, the man’s beautiful golden dog, which looks like a yellow lab mix, jumps up and almost bites his hand. He continues barking to make sure that no one else tries to touch his owner.

After that, a policeman moves onto the scene to try to determine what’s happening. No sooner does he approach does the dog put his front paws on his owner’s body, barking furiously at the officer. The policeman continues to try to touch the man but wisely uses his nightstick, knowing that the protective dog might just bite his hand if he’s not careful.

Then the truth comes out from the people standing around watching the scene. “He’s drunk!” they say, loudly, to the police officer. “Hit him a little bit, to wake him up!” they joke.

But for the dog, it’s no laughing matter. It doesn’t matter to him that his owner has had one too many. He just wants to make sure that he does his job as guardian. And he does it incredibly well, barking and warding off everyone’s attempts to wake the man up.

Finally, after repeated attempts by the policeman, the dog’s owner starts to stir, clearly under the influence. He looks bleary-eyed and clearly has no idea that’s he fallen asleep right in the middle of the road. Whatever happened, he certainly had one too many.

As he staggers to get up, he even brushes his loyal dog off him, ungrateful for the protection. While this dog is definitely his best friend, he doesn’t seem to be a very good friend to it.

While the man came out of this incident quite well, other than the pounding headache he must have, this isn’t the first time an inebriated man has ended up with a dog. On New Year’s 2018, a young man in Waukesha, Winconsin, walked into the wrong house after enjoying himself a bit too much drinking in 2019. According to WISN in Milwaukee, he fell asleep in a dog bed with the family’s 120-pound (approx. 54-kilogram) guard dog!

Apparently, the guard dog realized he meant no harm, because when the family saw him in the morning, “the dog was sleeping on top of him,” enjoying the extra warmth. Thankfully, in both cases, the dogs kept the men in check.

After hearing about these stories, you have to wonder who the real animals are!
