Originally introduced in 1984 and discontinued in 1991, the Grand Wagoneer had been brought back in 2021 for the 2022 model year. This beautiful SUV is built in Warren, Michigan.
The 2022 Grand Wagoneer is powered by a 6.4-liter engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Range Select (ERS). This brute powertrain produces up to 470 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, with fuel economy rated at 13 mpg on the city and 18 mpg on the highway for a combined average of 15 mpg.
Also available is a 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six engine which can put down 510 horsepower and 500 lb-ft or torque, while achieving a little better gas efficiency at 14/20 city/highway.
Standard adventuring and off-roading features include active two-speed on-demand transfer case with Selec-Speed control, Quadra-Lift Air Suspension, electronic rear limited slip differential, just to name a few. The head-up display (HUD) is also quite helpful.
Uconnect 5 Nav infotainment system with a 12.0-inch touch display provides a whole menu of communication and entertainment features like Wireless Apple CarPlay, Wireless Android Auto, Active GPS Navigation, and SiriusXM. Quality sound is provided by the McIntosh Reference Entertainment System with 23 speakers.
Inside, the new Grand Wagoneer is one beautiful vehicle. The Palermo leather-trimmed seats with French accent stitching go quite nicely with the dark walnut interior accents in the Global Black cabin. However, I would have liked some other parts of the cabin to be a little lighter. The big cabin had just had too much darkness. Admittedly the ambient lighting helped to deflect some of the darkness for a more relaxing spirit.
There are more comfort mechanisms than you can ever imagine. Heated and ventilated front seats are 24-way power adjustable, and the occupants can make use of the massage capability to relax and sink into these seats. The storage space in the inner door panels were very narrow and not very deep. Because of the massage mechanism that took most of the space below the touch display, except for two cup holder area, there was little open storage space for small or medium size items.
Thanks to its generous size, there is great amount of space for everything. Grand Wagoneer boasts most overall passenger volume in its class, plus best-in-class second-row and third-row leg room. It also has the most cargo volume behind the third row in the class.
The 360-degree Surround-View Camera leads the parade in safety features, especially in an urban setting, but very helpful for off-roading as well. Speaking of which, the Grand Wagoneer can do up to 24 inches of water fording. Features like Hill Start Assist, Pedestrian and Cyclist Emergency Braking, Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, and Drowsy Driver Detection work together to make your drive safe and fun.
Outside, my Grand Wagoneer was wearing a Bright White Clear-Coat paint that complemented the 22-inch tinted polished wheels with black inserts and the adjustable roof-rail crossbars. Four steel skid plates protected the front axle, transfer case, fuel tank, and rear stabilizing bushings.
The price of the 2022 Grand Wagoneer Obsidian 4X4 starts at $104,135. This model is just below the range-topping Series III, which starts at $107,995. The base Series I starts at $88,640.
