The M-B A 220 is powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four turbo engine that cranks out 188 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The engine power is regulated through a 7G-DCT 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The drivetrain enables the A 220 to run the 0-60 sprint in 6.1 seconds.
At the same time, the A 220 achieves a fuel consumption rating of 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway for a combined average of 28 mpg. The engine was more than adequate, but engine noise is on the loud side, especially when idling.
The A 220 comes with a large selection of standard equipment, like panoramic roof, eight-way power adjustable front seats with MB-Tex simulated leather upholstery, 7-inch touchscreen multimedia display, plus auto-dimming rearview and driver-side mirrors.
I would recommend the Multimedia Package ($1,295) which bundles MB Navigation with three-year map updates, augmented video for navigation, and Speed Limit Assist. All this extra superb technology reaches the driver through the upgraded 10.25-inch touchscreen.
Even the base model is equipped with an eight speaker sound system, five USB-C ports, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
To take command of all those features, one must master the centrally located touchpad. This touchpad is terribly sensitive and could become challenging to use. However, if you are gifted in its use and have gentle fingers, not allowing your hand or wrist to wander, then you should be okay.
The interior is of premium quality with comfortable seating. A trio of circular decorative air vents located across the center stack keep the cabin cool or warm with style.
The standard folding backseat with 40/20/40 split enables you to fit larger items in the back. However, the trunk only provides for 8.6 cubic feet of room for luggage with all seats up.
Blind spot assist, active brake assist, electronic stability control, and anti-theft alarm system are some examples of the safety/security technology on the A 220.
All this beauty was coated in Denim Blue Metallic, contrasting the black interior with brushed aluminum trim.
Crash test by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not been completed as the time of this writing.
The A 220 is comfortable with adequate torque, numerous standard features, and a sustainable luxurious cabin. It competes quite nicely with the Cadillac CT4 and BMW 2-Series, especially on price.
Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price for the 2021 Mercedes-Benz A 220 4MATIC sedan starts at $35,650. There are several options packages you can add on top.
