Historically, Jaguar has liked to remain competitive in different segments of the automobile market. However, it seems this manufacturer has chosen to focus only on the SUV market as the XF is the last remaining sedan model. And the XF was launched in 2007.
My tester, a top-of-line P300 R-Dynamic model, was dressed quite nicely in an exterior color of British Racing Green, with Ebony interior.
The XF is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 296 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The 8-speed automatic transmission with chrome gearshift paddles makes for smooth transitions through the gears.
The fuel economy is rated at 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, for a combined average of 25 mpg.
The XF has an athletic stance, standing on 19-inch wheels and presenting a noble front fascia. On the other hand, the taillights look a little plain, but the large air intakes add a more powerful and sophisticated demeanor overall.
The FX has certainly improved the interior with high quality materials and grained leather, heated seats. It features power front seats with lumbar support and memory, and easy-folding rear seats.
A sliding Panoramic Roof allowed for a greater outside heavenly outlook on nice days, while the rain-sensing windshield wipers ensure a clearer frontal view on rainy or snowy days.
The redesigned center console “flows upward to meet the interior’s most significant upgrade, Jaguar’s Pivi Pro infotainment Center,” according to its press materials. This system is housed in an 11.4-inch screen. Admittedly the system was a little slow to respond at times. I would have preferred more buttons and knobs to control radio volume and station selection on the console.
Some adjustments located on the steering wheel were a little challenging. Selections on the screen for SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and HD Radio were not always easily called up.
Standard features on the new FX were greatly improved and more were added. I especially liked the 12-speaker Meridian Sound System.
Safety features like Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keeping Assist, and Traffic Sign Recognition are included in the standard equipment set. There is a new feature, for me, called Perimeter Alarm, SOS Emergency Call and Stolen Vehicle Locater.
On a recent trip to Austin from Dallas I had an opportunity to drive on long straight highways at a fast speed, and twisty, narrow roadways under construction. The FX handled everything smoothly without an issue, whether power was needed in a hurry or an emergency stop was necessary.
Driver visibility must be improved if Jaguar wants a more perfect car.
The list price of the XF R-Dynamic SE AWD starts at $49,950.
Several optional packages are available. I would recommend the $700 Cold Package featuring heated steering wheel and windshield, and headlight power wash.
As of this writing, this vehicle has not been rated by the government for overall vehicle score for frontal crash, side crash, or rollover.
