The new Alfa Romeo Stelvio is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, delivering up to 280 horsepower through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Estimated mileage is 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, for a combined 24-mpg average. The powertrain is fairly quick with a responsive throttle that ramps up power smoothly. I truly enjoyed hearing the raspy sounding exhaust system.
The cornering grip and engaging chassis work well together. Stelvio has quick reflexes, especially for a crossover. All the rich good looks and sporty interior roll on 20-inch wheels.
Inside, black or red color sport seats add to the stylish cabin. Seats are attractive and comfortable, while aluminum accents adorn dash, doors, and center console. However, I would have preferred more cargo space behind the back seats. Push button stop/start system and remote start system are great conveniences.
Power folding heated mirrors, heated windshield washer nozzles, power liftgate, and tire service kit add to the safety and utility of the vehicle. The interior has been elevated slightly with a redesigned center console. An available wireless smartphone charging pad is also included.
Little things like a smartphone slot between the cup holders and a tray near the driver’s left knee, plus a removable tray at the bottom of the center console are nice little amenities often forgotten by manufacturers.
The new infotainment system comes in one 8.8-inch touchscreen. Alfa Romeo has retained the handy rotary control. There is also a 7.0 inch instrument cluster TFT color display. Admittedly, the touchscreen and rotary controller were challenging for me to use. Simple maneuvers like attempting to use the radio or to adjust bass and treble need to be made easier without becoming a multi-tasking experience. Maybe something as simple as a knob or easily read buttons would accomplish the task easier and quicker.
Even though the navigation system is optional, my tester had it. However, navigation alerts were not always enough in advance to allow you to make a particular turn with ease, or to prepare for unexpected road work.
Alfa Romeo offers several optional equipment packages for the Stelvio Ti Sport. The $1,100 Nero Edizion Sport package adds many black exterior parts, such as 20″ Miron Black aluminum wheels and Dark Miron V Scudetto Grille. The $1,350 Ti Sport Performance Package adds active suspension and limited-slip differential (LSD) rear axle. The $3,400 Active Driver Assist Package Ti Sport brings many advanced safety features, including Active Blind-Spot Assist, Driver Attention Alert, and Traffic Sign Recognition.
2020 Alfo Romeo Stelvio starts at $41,400 for the base RWD model. The Ti Sport AWD model carries a list price of $48,300.
