HONG KONG—Kowloon Bowling Green Club emerged victorious at the top-of-the-table clash with defending champion Kowloon Cricket Club last Saturday, September 27 and is now holding a seven point advantage over its rival.
As the two teams have opened up a big gap from the chasing pack, the game over the weekend was widely considered as a title decider.
While Heron Lau led his KBGC teammate to record an easy win against Jimmy Chiu at 24:7, his teammate Stanley Lai needed a brilliant shot at the last end to earn a draw of 15:15 against former Hong Kong number one Noel Kennedy of KCC.
The last rink skipped by Macau international James Cheng was chasing his game against KCC’s Chadwick Chen throughout and was losing 12:18 until the 14th end. He subsequently won 10 shots from the last four ends to wrap up the game 22:18.
The result of 7-1 is totally acceptable to KBGC as this allows them to open up a lead of seven points against KCC. With only four games to go and three of them are against teams at the bottom half of the table, there is a big chance for KBGC to regain the title they lost to KCC for the last two years.
While the KBGC-A team is working for their first title in three years, their brothers in team-B were dragged further into trouble as they lost 6:2 at the hands of the Police. They are now 11 points less than Indian Recreation Club, the team just above the relegation zone. KBGC-B will play against IRC this weekend and if they lose, their fate is probably sealed as their remaining fixtures included difficult games against second-placed KCC and third-placed Hong Kong Football Club.
The bottom team is HKFC-B, who has one point less than KBGC-B.
Women
In the women’s section, Hong Kong Football Club-A team is closer to their eighth successive title, after drawing with second-placed Shatin Sports Association away from home.
After the game HKFC-A still holds a six point advantage against STSA.
At the bottom end of the table, the bottom team Police are still seven points away from safety, despite recording a 6-2 victory against third-placed United Services Recreation Club last week. Second from bottom is Filipino Club who is now two points away from safety.
