The New York Jets will move right tackle Wayne Hunter back into a reserve role, according to a report on the team’s website.

Third-year pro Austin Howard will move into the starting right tackle position this week against Carolina, while Hunter will go back to being a backup at several positions on the line as well as at tight end.

“I’m going to put Wayne in that role, where really he excelled, and that is being a guy that basically fits, whether it’s being a tackle, guard, tight end,” said head coach Rex Ryan.

Hunter struggled as a starter last season as well as in two games this preseason, allowing three sacks in one half against the Giants.

Austin is listed at six feet, seven inches and weighs 333 pounds. The 25-year-old went undrafted out of Northern Iowa but caught on with the Eagles, making one start in 2010 as a rookie.
