SYDNEY, Australia—Adrian Munn, a professional cameraman who works with Channel 9, attended Shen Yun with his wife, Nailia Munn, an accountant, at the Sydney Lyric Theatre on April 29.

“It’s breathtaking … I’ve never seen anything as good in my life,” said Mr. Munn.

“A lot of the dances are very emotional,” he said. “[T]hey tell a lovely story.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier Chinese classical dance company. Along with folk dances and solo performances, the production depicts story-based pieces that tell tales from ancient times to the modern-day.
According to the company’s website, the presented heroes embody the most exalted virtues of Chinese civilisation and convey morals still relevant to the modern day.

Mr. Munn was particularly moved by this season’s dance story called, “Riding Alone to the Rescue,” where a young mother must make a life changing decision during the war-torn Three Kingdoms era.

“I thought that was very, very good … very emotional,” he said.

As a news cameraman, Mr. Munn said he was impressed with the coordination between the dancers, orchestra, and animation in the backdrop.

Shen Yun utilises a cutting-edge, patented digital backdrop that allows the performers to remarkably travel back and forth between the stage and the background projection.

“I think some of the graphics that they’re using in the show is amazing … I’m enjoying that,” he said.

“I was glad that there’s an actual orchestra and it’s not recorded music,” he added. “[H]ow the music is coordinated with the picture, it’s very, very good.”

One of Shen Yun’s unique features is its orchestra. It’s the first in the world to permanently combine classical Western and Chinese instruments within a Western symphony orchestra.

Since 2006, Shen Yun has performed at top theatres worldwide with a mission to revive China’s 5,000-year-old traditional culture. Drawing upon ancient China’s Buddhist and Daoist philosophies, Shen Yun says its performances demonstrate “China before communism.”

“It’s fantastic … very exciting,” said Mrs. Munn. “[W]e still need to know cultural things, every nationality, and I think it’s good that we can share this kind of experience and cultural background.”
