WORCESTER, Mass.—Rose Kuchta, a stained glass artist, was emotional after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts.

“It was all magical to me,” said Mrs. Kuchta, who came with her husband Bob from the Cape Cod area to attend Shen Yun’s evening performance at the Hanover Theatre on Jan. 14.

“I didn’t know. It was just absolutely incredible ... When I saw it, I was like, do they actually—do they do this? Is this something that they did before communism hit China?” she said. “Was it like that?”

“After communism, everything was dark,” she said.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, and takes as its mission to show audiences the beauty and goodness of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, or “China before communism.” Since its inception in 2006, the company has impressed audiences the world over with an all-new production each year.
For Mrs. Kuchta, who works with a great deal of color herself, Shen Yun did a dazzling thing with color alone.
“The color brought happiness, emotion, everything,” she said. “I have loved the dance. I have loved the costuming, the performances were absolutely incredible.

Mr. Kuchta added, “it was just spectacular.”

“Everything that they did was just fabulous,” Mrs. Kuchta said.

‘When I Hear it, My Feelings Come Out’

Also moved by the performers were Ms. Maria Tsoutis and Mr. John Hanlon.

“I don’t think anybody should have let this pass them, because they have to see this,” said Mr. Hanlon. “This is an incredible show that they'll really enjoy for a long time. And I’m looking forward to see it again next year.”

Ms. Tsoutis, a dance instructor, was full of praise for the dancers, explaining that what Shen Yun has achieved couldn’t be done without tremendous amounts of dedication and devotion.

“It was so professional that it was beyond words. These young people have a great future,” she said. “They have an understanding about executing and presenting their dance, to the public and to the world. And also expressing and showing, in this particular dance, the history of the country and what these people had to go through. It’s a presentation of the past to the present.”

Ms. Tsoutis was full of admiration for the other art forms showcased in the production as well. A solo of the erhu, a two-stringed, ancient Chinese instrument, had captured her heart.
That instrument has a lot of feeling to it, and when I hear it, I my feelings come out. I can express my feelings, outwardly and inwardly, spiritually.

“That was beautiful,” she said. “That instrument has a lot of feeling to it, and when I hear it, I my feelings come out. I can express my feelings, outwardly and inwardly, spiritually.”

For Kathleen and Dave Burns, Shen Yun presented the true spirit of China.

“I’ve been all through China, so I’m fully aware,” said Mr. Burns, who explained that Shen Yun captured the old, authentic China. “I would say the show is fantastic.”

Mrs. Burns said, “I wish it can show in China, and it’s amazing to see how far things have been lost since communism.  It’s great to see all of the beauty, that [Shen Yun] kept it going for these years. It’s very sad.”

“The dancers are incredible. I enjoyed them tremendously,” she said. “The story needs to get out ... it’s so important.”

Mr.  Burns expressed support for Shen Yun’s mission to revive traditional Chinese culture. “They should keep it going ... bring it back,” he said.
