Human Rights Activist: Shen Yun Is an ‘Immense Win for the Public’

MIAMI—Rosa Maria Paya, a human rights activist and the founder of Cuba Decide Initiative, said what struck her most about Shen Yun Performing Arts is that the show “projects an image of China that is unknown for many,” and it is “rescuing values and history that many in the world just ignore.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Its artists are seeking to revive the glory of China’s 5,000 years of history and share through a series of short dance pieces all that is good and beautiful in China before communism.
After seeing Shen Yun on the evening of Dec. 29 at the Adrienne Arsht Center, Ms. Paya thought the performance was very emotional and full of ideas that people don’t usually think of when China comes to mind.

“We think of China, we think about the products, sometimes about the pandemic, but we do not think about the people that have created such beauty,” she said.

Ms. Paya was impressed by the modern-day story dance piece that depicts the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of followers of Falun Gong, a spiritual practice that upholds the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance.

“I really love the fact that you’re not only sharing the history of China but also talking to us about what is going on in China right now. That for me has immense value,” she said.

“What we just saw is very Chinese but it’s also universal. It’s the sharing of family, of the motherland, of joy, and of the love that connects us all.”

‘This Show Shines Like a Seed of Light Into People’

Having looked forward to seeing Shen Yun for a long time, physicians Aaron Tuckler and Patricia Romaniuk finally got the opportunity on Dec. 29. The couple was blown away by Shen Yun’s beautiful messages of hope.

“You battle the evil with good, and good is always going to win despite the messages we get from the media and from the material world,” said Mr. Tuckler, “I was not expecting that at all. I love that.”

Reflecting on the turbulence in the world right now, Ms. Romaniuk said, “these are times where it’s very insecure, you don’t know what’s going to happen, and to know that there is something more to believe in, it’s very important to people. I think it was very magical.”

Prior to the communist takeover and the spread of atheism, the ancient Chinese had a deep belief in the divine. The couple was very touched by Shen Yun’s portrayal of this spirituality.

Mr. Tuckler said Shen Yun “gave me hope and happiness to know that we have a divine healer that doesn’t move despite the difficult times we’re having now. We can always rely on him, he’s like a steady rock. That’s what I felt when I [watched the performance.]”
